Donald Jack served in the RAF from 1943-1947 before moving to Canada in 1951. He won Canada's Leacock Medal for humorous fiction three times, for volumes in The Bandy Papers series.
With this volume, Canadian novelist Jack wraps up the humorous fictional memoirs of Bartholomew Bandy, whose madcap adventures cover the decade between 1916 and 1926. Here Bandy is off to India to establish an air force for the Maharajah of Jhamjarh, who fears invasion by a neighboring state. Bandy begins his latest career by drunkenly alienating the new British Viceroy of India, deporting himself in typically unconventional manner. "In my time I've driven quite a few people to drink, distraction, or the Northwest Territories," he admits to his fiancee, lovely Icelander Sigridur Jonsdottir, M.D. Jack's deadpan British humor ("I don't like new experience. I don't like any kind of experience. I'm an academic," a scholar confesses to Bandy) will draw new fans to the blundering triumphs of this lovable rascal.

"(C)ontinues the well-established tradition for humour and adventure as Bartholomew Bandy pursues his mad destiny in India. It's 1925 and Bandy is working for the Maharajah of Jhamjarh, trying to set up and operate a new air force while sidestepping the short-sighted protests of the British government in India. The new air force certainly comes in handy when the nefarious neighboring state of Khaliwar decides to attack. But they haven't counted on Jhamjarh's secret weapon - the unorthodox methods and outrageous behavior of Bartholomew Bandy. Despite these distractions, the mystical visions of India have their effect on Bandy, leaving him a changed man. The underlying element of anger which has always been a part of his humor is finally resolved - which makes for a very satisfactory ending to the story of Bartholomew Bandy." Light edge wear at top/bottom of spine, very small scuff on front board near spine. Dust jacket has small crease at top of spine, tiny dint at bottom of front hinge. Seller Inventory # 27021
