Corbett gathered these singing, dancing, hand-clapping, counting-out, ball-bouncing, rope-jumping, guessing, and riddling games in the streets and yards where children play. It's an excellent collection, amply decorated with charming watercolor drawings (reminiscent in style and spirit of Marc Brown's work) of good-natured children of varied ethnic backgrounds. There are simple directions on how to play the games as well as good subject and alphabetical indexes. Since this is a book for children and parents rather than folklorists, there are no collector's notes. The book is similar to its ancestor of 100 years, Kate Greenaway's Book of Games , but is a much fuller collection. Of current titles, the most comparable is Anne Rockwell's Games (Crowell, 1973; o.p.); again, Corbett's book has a far broader selection. Although the children Corbett records play on the streets of England, most of the games will be recognized by American readers. Peppered with perky ink-and-wash drawings, the oversize book is arranged in six broad headings: Action Rhymes and Singing Games, Dancing Rhymes and Games, Handclapping Rhymes, Dipping and Counting-Out Rhymes, Skipping and Ball-Bouncing and, finally, Hiding, Guessing, Tickling and Chasing. Parents and teachers will warm to the variety of the finger plays, while children will likely delight in the jump rope sections. The complete lack of musical accompaniments for the familiar--and more importantly, the unfamiliar--songs and rhymes is a disappointing aspect of an otherwise engaging work. An alphabetical index and a subject index are included. Ages 4-12.
