Linda Jo Burke Merceau marries Buddy right after high school. Abandoned by her husband seven years later, she moves back with her pessimistic mother, Juanita, and agoraphobic brother, Franklin. Now the mother of Paulie, a withdrawn six-year-old, Linda Jo's responsibilities increase after her mother's heart attack. Eventually, their father's gentle memory helps Franklin and Linda Jo face their fears, accept themselves, and find strengths within each other to share with those individuals whom they love best. This is a bittersweet story of loneliness, choices, coping, forgiveness , and growth by the author of Frobisch's Angel ( LJ 4/15/87). Highly recommended. Literary Guild alternate.
