Grade 1-3 Granny says that she deplores the behavior of modern children, and then goes on to give humorous accounts of her own misdeeds as a child. In telling these brief anecdotes, Granny maintains with amiable irony that ``we had to behave in my day. You modern children have much more fun.'' The small pictures work very well. They are detailed enough to satisfy careful and leisurely looking. The colors are soft and cheering, and the characters' expressions' reflect gentle, familial teasing. Thomson's intention is to present a book that parents can use to lead young children into sight reading. Her light, amusing tales are just the sort to inspire young beginners with the desire to read for fun, while at the same time painlessly working to strengthen skills.
