PreSchool-K-- Maris has created another "read it again, please" for toddlers and preschoolers with carefully designed half-page inserts that double the fun and expand the 50-word story. A pet rabbit escapes from his pen, considers several hiding places, and is caught and replaced in the pen--end of story. However, each illustration has a plethora of charming beasties and other items to identify and locate on succeeding pages. A turn of the first half-page opens the cage door, the second reveals two dogs inside the house. With the third, the rabbit disappears into a large clay pipe and out the other end. Another opens into the ducks' house and, finally, rabbit's last hiding place, from whence he is lured forth by the boy holding a carrot. The assorted creatures are the friendly sort that almost any youngster would love to know--a cat, a frog, a tiny mouse, a hedgehog, snails and bugs, butterflies. As in In My Garden (Greenwillow, 1988) , Maris' watercolor paintings are large, colorful, and realistic in portrayal; the presentation is totally successful and right on target for the intended age group. --Virginia Opocensky, formerly at Lincoln City Libraries, NB
