Reviews

PreSchool-Grade 2-- A collection of 58 poems, old and new, that are sure to involve children in the pleasures of poetry. The short poems cover a wide range of topics, will appeal to children's love of repetition and rhythm, and are meant to encourage joining in and acting out. While a number of the entries have been previously anthologized, there is still a good selection of the unfamiliar, and there is no significant overlap with other collections for this age group. Many of the original sources are now out of print. The most pleasurable section is that of lullabyes at the end, especially the poems by Charlotte Pomerantz and Jane Yolen. Gundersheimer's circle of bright, jolly children on the cover will entice readers into the book, so it's a little disappointing not to find color within, although her typically whimsical and scratchy pen-and-ink drawings, sometimes reminiscent of Sendak's "Nutshell Library" days, are quite endearing. It's unfortunate that some of the pages don't seem to balance pictures and text very well. These are comforting poems on familiar themes with few surprises, but will supplement other collections for the youngest of poetry lovers. --Annette Curtis Klause, Montgomery County Department of Public Libraries, MD
