The author chronicles his walk from Atlanta to Savannah, examining the scars left by the Civil War, reflecting on what being Southern meant to his late father, and encountering many eccentric characters with roots in the war

Jerry Ellis is the author of Walking to Canterbury: A Modern Journey Through Chaucer's Medieval England, Bareback! One Man's Journey along the Pony Express Trail, Marching through Georgia: My Walk with Sherman, and Walking the Trail: One Man's Journey Along the Cherokee Trail of Tears.
This time, Jerry Ellis, who walked the Cherokee "Trail of Tears," follows Sherman's "March to the Sea," from Atlanta to Savannah. He finds Sherman to be a complex man, and we find the South to be a place where people aren't easily stereotyped. Ellis's gentle voice is full of empathy and feeling for the many people he meets and for the land he loves. His reading is moving in many places and always sublime. The only drawbacks are that this is an abridgment, and the irony of the author having an ancestor who fought for the Union is not mentioned. M.T.F. (c)AudioFile, Portland, Maine
