PreSchool-K-"Ducks quack. Cows moo./Chickens cluck. Doves coo." In rhymed couplets, one line per page, Hall introduces the sounds animals make. Every other one ends with the line, "But what does the rabbit say?" In the end, readers learn that "Rabbit makes no peep or call./And still we love him best of all!" Children will enjoy quacking with the ducks, growling with the bear, and hissing with the snake. Cartwright's stylized illustrations done in deeply saturated colors add interest and action to the merry text as a boy and girl search for an answer to the title question. It will be a book that children will beg to have read again and again. Team it with Francesca Simon's But What Does the Hippopotamus Say? (Gulliver, 1994) and Bill Martin, Jr.'s Polar Bear, Polar Bear, What Do You Hear? (Holt, 1995) for an interactive group session; add a fun barnyard romp like Jill Runcie's Cock-a-Doodle-Doo!
