Review
Laugh out loud as three inquisitive kittens investigate a fishbowl and wonder "what it's like in there" while a goldfish swims in circles, unperturbed. The black and white longhair is the most interested--an orange and a silver-gold tabby each act as the straight men in the comic routine. Kitty quickly discards the idea of climbing in with the fish upon discovering that water is wet. ("Oh! Wet? I don't like water.") But when a second, empty tank is found, the kitten decides the time is right to learn how to swim. After all, fish just wiggle their tails, right? And kittens have tails...
This very simple photo story, with one short sentence per page, relies on the photos of three adorable and silly kittens to carry the weight. And carry it they do! Roy Volkmann's photos play on the distortions caused by the fishbowl, both full and empty, as well as the natural curiosity and goofiness of young felines. The "conversations" among the three cats are apt and entertaining. It may not turn out to be an all-time classic, but it sure is a fun little picture book, especially for feline fans. Prefer puppies?
