Reviews

Gr 7-10-In this compilation of self-help/improvement tips, Carter-Scott provides 10 chapters of "teen truths." Rules addressed are actually discussions and anecdotal accounts of individuals and how they faced the problems of change and choices; friendships and romantic relationships; questioning authority; making mistakes; and lifestyles (drugs, alcohol, tobacco). The stories are primarily middle-class vignettes of a demographically stable world; names may reflect a variety of ethnic groups, but everything is pretty simplistic in discussion and problem resolution. There is no mention of date rape, and abortion is assiduously avoided in favor of adoption. The author avoids overt didacticism and does not proselytize any religious beliefs, but there is an overtone of teacher or parent-to-teen advice. Clear, concise writing and a palm-sized format will appeal to readers interested in this type of self-help book. The brief entries are accompanied by sidebar quotes from a variety of sources; there is a brief list of hot lines, but no Webliography.-Gail Richmond, San Diego Unified Schools, CA

Beginning with "Truth #1: Your body will change" and ending with "Truth #10: Adolescence is the tunnel to your future," Ch‚rie Carter-Scott espouses 10 touchstones to help teens grin and bear it in If High School Is a Game, Here's How to Break the Rules: A Cutting Edge Guide to Becoming Yourself. She backs them up with actual experiences from teens plus quotes from famous adults who have made it to the other side. For instance, the chapter "Your inner world is your safety zone" offers "Diana's story," describing how one girl changed her looks and interests with each new boyfriend, followed by a quote from Mariah Carey about being secure within yourself.

Gr. 9-12. You may already have several books with this title in your collection; but, as with Race Relations [BKL F 1 01], this book, in the Current Controversies series, is an entirely new anthology of recent articles and speeches on a crucial subject. It will find an audience not only among high-school students but also among teachers, administrators, and librarians, both in the field and in graduate school. The issues debated include banning hate speech, filtering pornography on the Internet, and government regulation of art and popular culture. Of course, there's a wealth of this kind of talk on the Web, but it's very helpful to have this edited introduction to various sides of the arguments. The book ends with a bibliography and a long annotated list of organizations to contact, and Web sites. Hazel Rochman
