Reviews

Guides to mail-order foods abound, and this new addition to the field is hardly unique, but it is more up to date than most and provides complete, concise information about each source listed. Particularly useful to the would-be buyer is its indication of the credit cards these suppliers accept. Although definitely a directory, it does contain odd recipes here and there provided by the suppliers and using their ingredients. This well-organized resource is divided into three parts: Part I lists sources of quality provisions of all kinds--baking supplies, herbs and spices, cheese and dairy products, oils and vinegars, rice and grains, etc.; Part II lists suppliers of regional and ethnic ingredients, both American and international; and Part III lists special sources for cooks--vendors of books, kitchen equipment and tools, special food gifts, and supplies for growing herbs and produce and for making beer and wine. The book is indexed by ingredients, suppliers, and recipes, making it quick and easy to use. Although not as indispensable as the subtitle suggests, this is a good buy if your library needs another directory of mail-order foods.
