From School Library Journal

A well-conceived series that introduces scientific principles clearly and simply, making learning what it should be--intriguing. The books are attractive in format; they have bright, clear photographs, presented in an appealing, easy-to-hold size. All are aimed at capturing young children's interest by examining various everyday objects from a variety of perspectives. Balloons are tossed, touched, squeezed, and filled with water. Escaping air is heard. Mirrors provide many ingenious activities, not only reflecting images, but light as well. Nancy and Ron Goor's Shadows (Crowell, 1981) explores many of the same aspects of shadows, but is illustrated with black-and-white photographs. Feathers are shown to exist in various sizes and colors; some shed water, but all share common physical characteristics. Appended to each book are additional activities, along with further explanatory notes for parents and teachers. Sure to stimulate children's critical thinking abilities. --Phyllis G. Sidorsky, National Cathedral School, Washington, DC

From Publishers Weekly

Budding scientists will have fun with--and learn a lot from--these four fact-filled titles in the Simple Science series. Pragoff's lively, vibrant photographs, depicting multicultural youngsters, possess considerable child appeal, and the simple texts make their respective subjects interesting without being overblown or pedantic. Frequently asked questions ("If I jump in the air, what happens to my shadow?"; "Can you see the drop of water on my feather?") involve the reader and encourage discussion. The final spreads of each book contain provocative addenda: "More things to do" suggests easy projects; "Find the page" acts as an index to the book's various concepts; and--of particular interest--"Notes for parents and teachers" amplify each subject with somewhat more technical data and explanations. Used by children alone or with help from parents or teachers, these intriguing books should handily expand young readers' technological awareness. Ages 5-8.
