Reviews

In this scholarly study by a Jesuit priest and renowned professor of Near Eastern studies at the University of Toronto, Peckham presents his version of the development of the Hebrew Bible. His controversial theory stems from his belief that the Bible did not develop from an oral tradition passed down from generation to generation but rather was composed in its entirety as a written document by authors who were members of a literate society that appreciated the content of their written work. This is a dense and highly complex study that delves deeply and presupposes that the reader is well versed in biblical literary tradition. Although the "Anchor Bible Reference" series is aimed at the broadest readership, this volume will pose difficulties for the general reader. Recommended for academic libraries with graduate religious studies programs.
