Because New York building contractor Rusk became a student in the Harvard Law School program on negotiation, the world has gained an author uniquely qualified to help would-be home remodelers and builders communicate with professionals in the field. Providing specific guidelines for each phase of a project, Rusk explains the pros and cons of material and construction options for floors, foundations, and walls and discusses value versus cost in easy-to-read style. In fictional "Nightmare Kitchen" and "Dream Kitchen" stories, he applies negotiation principles to realistic settings, keeping us engaged with developing plots. Reading the book may help prevent much of the frustration that has become a routine part of home remodeling, because while most laymen know they need help with construction, many fail to realize that success depends on communication and conflict resolution skills, too. Both are set up as "projects from hell," where the homeowner is ill informed, the contractor opportunistic, and the result less than desirable. Through his thorough negotiation techniques, employed at every step of the renovation process, Rusk shows the way to a successful project and identifies the major problems in a renovation?money, time, power, management, and quality?and their effective resolution. He takes each project through mediation to a successful conclusion, but the terror and suspense are sufficiently maintained to be truthful and interesting.
