Things couldn’t get any worse for poor Polly. It’s her ninth birthday, and she’s stricken with the chicken pox and quarantined for a week. Why did she have to get the chicken pox now instead of next week? Of course her birthday party has to be canceled. Will things turn around for Polly or will this really be her worst birthday ever?

Grade 2-4-Polly's birthday plans have been scratched because she has chicken pox. If that's not bad enough, her hamster dies, and no one seems terribly concerned that this will be her absolutely worst birthday ever. The girl's diary narrative expounds on her woes in excitable, verbose entries that capture a nine-year-old voice to a tee. Lucky for Polly, her life improves. The itching subsides; the spots disappear. There are new pets (and a dilemma over names), a rescheduled party, and great friends-even Josh (who is NOT her boyfriend). The lively, breathless chatter keeps going until the last page. The clever black-and-white collages include childlike drawings, vintage illustrations, and photos. Adding authenticity are the occasional misspelled words-"Quorinteen" and "brocerly" are two of the best. For the most part, the British vernacular will be easily understood (illustrations and contextual clues help). This charming addition for chapter-book shelves has crossed "the Pond" without missing a beat.-Carolyn Janssen, Children's Learning Center of the Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County, OH
