PreSchool-Grade 2--Readers who enjoyed Dog Eared (2002) and Dog Days (2003, both Doubleday) will welcome this new adventure about Otis. Here, the floppy-eared pooch has his first stay at the "Misty Meadow dog hotel." Lucy, his owner, vows that she will return for him "soon," a promise that weighs heavily as night turns into day. Recalling a story that she read to him "about two dogs and a cat who made their way home across a wild and unknown countryside," Otis takes action, leaps the fence, and makes a valiant attempt to go home--with no success. Fortunately, he does find his way back to Misty Meadow and thoroughly enjoys the remainder of his stay. Cheerful cartoon illustrations in pen, ink, and watercolor suit this gathering of playful pups and "woolly beasts" (i.e., sheep). Fretful young pet owners may wonder why the Misty Meadow proprietress seems oblivious to the pup's escape and return, but Otis time may be different from human time. The text is neatly printed beneath the illustrations, which will encourage beginning readers, though a few multisyllabic words may be a challenge.
