From Library Journal

In this, Dubie's 13th book of poems, the political and historical realms vie with the purely personal for our interest. Love poems and reminiscence of kin alternate with poems about oppression and violence. Strange, wonderful, highly compressed metaphors like "I bled like sleeves from a body" repose alongside very flat, prosy language broken into verse lines in a seemingly arbitrary fashion. The unexpected and highly effective use of rhyme at the very close of "Lamentations"' and "Archangels" points up just how fruitful greater attention to form might be for this poet. A rather ahistorical and impressionistic sensibility undermines several of the historical pieces, as does a penchant for easy political attitudinizing: "what/ I want to know of my government is/ Doesn't poverty just fucking break your heart?" Suitable for larger collections. Frank J. Lepkowski, Oakland Univ. Libs.
