David Small has previouslypublished three novels. ALMOST FAMOUS was a finalist for the National BookAward, first novel category; THE RIVER IN WINTER was selected by the New YorkTimes as one of its Notable Books of the Year, as was his third book, ALONE. AGuggenheim Fellow, Small was born in Gardiner, Maine, and raised in New Yorkand Pennsylvania, but his spiritual home has always been his grandparents'house on Dennison Avenue in Freeport, Maine. He currently lives outside of Harrisburg,Pennsylvania, with his wife, Jemry, and a cat named Captain Cloudy.
An independent original in every way, young Joe leaves homeleaving behind his very young mother and brutal stepfather. He moves in with his grandfather, and becomes involved with a rich judge and his beautiful daughter. He also becomes involved with the law and faces the dilemma of telling the truth in a no-win situation or lying and buying his way into the easy life. An old scandal and a startling climax change his life forever. With expert touches of a Maine background, the author succeeds in telling a fast-paced story with a fascinating protagonist and a wealth of ideas on individuality, compromise, and the human condition. By the author of Almost Famous , this is highly recommended for all fiction collections, including YA. R.H. Donahugh, Youngstown & Mahoning Cty. P.L., Ohio
