Reviews

"Science! true daughter of Old Time thou art!" wrote Poe in tribute. This often-serious, often-spurious account of madcap scientists and modern inventions blends the writing of H.G. Wells and Isaac Asimov with that of Charles Darwin and Peter Medawar. Less accessible to readers than The Norton Book of Nature Writing ( LJ 3/1/90), this suffers from its conception as a "personal collection"; the editor states that "It has been no part of my purpose to present fine writing about science . . . much that is not of the first quality . . . is (I hope) redeemed by historical or social interest." The book may tickle the fancy of some science lovers; for larger collections.
