A Guide to the musical works of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.
Published to coincide with the 200th anniversary of Mozart's death in 1791, this book is designed to be a guide to the composer's works and is aimed at the music-lover who wishes to read something informative about any particular piece. Although there are many books which deal with the handful of famous operas, symphonies, concertos, or string quartets upon which Mozart's reputation rests, this collection contains in a single volume details about any work composed by Mozart and where, when and why he wrote it, what it is like, and what special significance it may have."synopsis" may belong to another edition of this title.
In assembling and editing this collection of essays, it was Mozart specialist Neal Zaslaw's wish to share with a broad audience some of the enjoyment and sense of discovery he has experienced in studying, teaching, writing about, and performing Mozart's music. In particular, this book will have served a worthy purpose if it encourages the reader to explore some of the riches to be discovered when one ventures off the straight and narrow path represented by the fewer than one hundred Mozart works found in the regular concert and opera repertory today.
Zaslaw has gathered a marvelous collection of program note-length essays for all 801 of Mozart's works. Some of the material has been adapted from record jackets, concert programs, and other sources by a number of writers, and some newly written. The compositons are divided into chapters according to type (e.g., Masonic Music; Dances), and the editors have added short overviews at the beginnings of each section. Through careful selection and good editing the essays are interesting, informative, and eminently readable, while avoiding technical jargon. An excellent companion for the bicentennial of Mozart's death this year.
