Cora Fry is a woman who has lived her whole life in the small New Hampshire town where she was born. Isolated from society's changes, she accepts the limitations of her life, yet she yearns "to understand light years." Cora's father says "choice rots the bones like candy rots the teeth." She muses casually about everyday concerns: her husband, her children, her job as a waitress; she concentrates "on the lives of squashes." Yet when her husband affronts her fierce pride and dignity, Cora confronts the compromises of her mother and friends, and moves to the edge of escape. She has a firm idea of what marriage should be, and she has the attentions of another man, who tries to convince her that she can have everything she wants is she will only take it. But this is a small town, a community knitted by the constraints of weather, gossip, habit, and family pride. Cora endangers her marriage at a considerable risk, far greater than that of the "liberated" middle-class woman. Still, Cora sees acutely, acts bravely, and draws us into her world of the kind and the ordinary, as well as the cruel. These fragments of the consciousness of Cora Fry can be read as one long poem. The narrative thread that shapes this sequence is the cycle of a year. Easily accessible, still this book of poetry is writing in the genre of Berryman's "The Dream Songs."

PW called this book "a small wonder," observing that "Brown's poetry touches human need and loneliness with awe, and the transient becomes palpable . . . . By the magic of understatement, shy indirections, the 'word unspoken,' she transforms small lives into widening echoes of pathos." (Nov .
