The sixth edition (LJ 3/1/87. 1st ed.; LJ 10/1/90. 3d ed.) of a biannual series from the Women's Research and Education Institute that documents the current social, economic, and political status of women in the United States, this book focuses on the workplace. Divided into three sections, it begins with topical essays that examine such areas as affirmative action, women in the workforce, work and family, and women as affected by issues including unemployment, welfare, pensions, and retirement. The study finds that although much progress has been made in recent years, there are still obstacles to be overcome, particularly in the areas of equal pay, treatment, and opportunity. The essays not only celebrate successes and point out where improvement is needed but also supply support so "that our hard-fought gains [will] not be taken from us." As has been the model with previous editions, the second section, "In Review: July 1993-March 1995," offers a time line of recent significant events influencing women. The book concludes with "American Women Today: A Statistical Portrait," a wealth of data presented primarily through charts, graphs, and tables. A comprehensive and informative work; recommended for women's studies collections.?Kathleen L. Atwood, Pomfret Sch. Lib., Ct.

The sixth of these volumes from the Women's Research and Education Institute in Washington, D.C., combines the series' standard "statistical portrait" of women's demographics, education, health, economic security, and roles in the U.S. military and elective office and its review of relevant news stories (from July_ 1993 through March 1995) with useful essays and analyses of "women and work" (parallel to the 1992 and 1994 editions' focus on politics and health care, respectively). In addition to more predictable subjects, such as women's increased workforce participation rate, the conflicting demands of jobs and family, and the welfare and affirmative action debates, this edition includes thoughtful studies of working women's restricted access to unemployment insurance benefits and pension coverage, and proposed changes that would allow these systems to function more equitably, not just for working women, but for men whose employment has been disrupted by recent changes in the labor market. Includes brief profiles of 55 of the 56 women (information was unavailable for all of them) in the 104th Congress. Mary Carroll
