About the Author
Nina Cassian (1924―2014) was born in Galati, Romania. A composer, journalist, film critic, and translator of Shakespeare and Brecht, Cassian was exiled from Romania in 1985.

Romanian poet Cassian was granted political asylum in the U.S. two decades ago. Since then, she has continued to publish in Romanian and, less frequently, in English. In her first English-language collection in 10 years, she gathers work originally written in English and some translations from the Romanian, including poems composed as long ago as the 1940s and as recently as the new millennium’s first years. They aren’t easy to segregate by language or era. They sweep along, their conversational tone alternately engaging and demanding. The most affecting are the latest of them, addressing the questions of age and increasing fragility in a direct, even sensuous fashion. Dimmed vision becomes “a veil of quietude / that protects my eyes / from the scratch of light,” while she notes that “we die gradually / and visibly / —In the eyes of those / who love us / and can’t help.” Less startling and more frightening than death, such physical decrepitude is rarely a subject for poetry, but never, perhaps, has it been more movingly rendered. --Patricia Monaghan
