George B. Tindall, Kenan Professor of History Emeritus at the University of North Carolina, is one of the country's most distinguished professors of American history. He is the author of many books, including South Carolina Negroes, 1877-1900; the award-winning Emergence of the New South, 1913-1945; The Disruption of the Solid South; and The Ethnic Southerners. David E. Shi is president and professor of history at Furman University. He was the Frontis W. Johnston Professor of History at Davidson College for over a decade.
