Synopsis

This new edition emphasizes the role of statistics in ongoing research - following the path from descriptive statistics to inferential statistics, and on to advanced topics. The book uses the raw data from several recently published studies to teach students the rationale of research design and statistical analysis. Students are encouraged to think statistically about all aspects of everyday life the use of applications drawn from contemporary behavioural science research. More time is devoted to the rationale of research design and statistical analysis than in previous editions, encouraging statistical literacy. Boxes provide a brief summary of research goals, exposing students to actual social science examples.

About the Author

David Jett Pittenger received his B.A. in Psychology from the College of Wooster, his Master's of Science from Texas A & M University, and his Ph.D. in Psychology from the University of Georgia. He is currently an Associate Professor and Chair in the department of Psychology at Marietta College in Marietta, Ohio. In addition to teaching courses in statistics and research design, David teaches courses in physiological psychology, psychometrics, learning and behavior, and cognitive psychology. David has many interests in psychology and has written articles on the partial reinforcement extinction effect, the ethical responsibilities of psychologists, the validity of personality inventories, and the teaching of psychology. David has been the recipient of numerous awards throughout his career, including the David A. Leach Award for Outstanding Student in Experimental Psychology at the College of Wooster, the Outstanding Teaching Assistant Award at the University of Georgia, and the McCoy Professor of Psychology-Award for Teaching Excellence at Marietta College.
