Synopsis
This book, as it surveys current gerontological research and theory, will explore the obvious questions about the prospects of slowing down or even abolishing old age, and of significantly extending the vigorous years of our lives. The central question, of course, is whether or not we can really hope to do it. If that answer is affirmative, we will then have to examine the ethical question implied by the new biological possibilities – whether we SHOULD proceed to do it, just because we can. And we will want to make some guesses as to when we might expect the advances to occur, as well as what the consequences might be – personal, national, global – when the new knowledge begins to be acquired and applied.
