PRESERVING NEW ENGLAND explores both the stereotypes of New England and the realty behind its landscape of town and farm, mountain and river valley.

The preservation movement in New England has often been seen as antithetical to progress. In reevaluating the movement, the authors conclude that preservation and progress must be linked. They begin by surveying the physical changes New England has undergone and the effects of forces like immigration and the railroad. The beginnings of the preservation movement are traced to the failed attempt to save the Old Indian House in Deerfield, Massachusetts; successful preservation projects then are described as models for future projects. Walter Beinecke's controversial transformation of Nantucket is followed by examples of preservation projects in mill towns and urban neighborhoods, on town commons and farms. Splendid vintage photographs and a fascinating text make this a recommended purchase for most libraries. Daniel J. Lombardo, Jones Lib., Amherst, Mass.
