A new book of drawings by the master ful Baskin is always eagerly received. This one is no exception. The selection of ink drawings and watercolors pre sents images of birds created over 30 years, including his most recent series, "The Raptors." These birds of prey are haunting and malevolent as they seem to swell beyond the edges of the page to envelop the viewer. Some are mon strous mutations, part bird, part man; this makes their fierce eyes and power ful beaks more sinister. The commen tary suggests these beautiful/evil crea tures symbolize 20th-century man just as Hieronymus Bosch transformed the real world of his time into the fantastic images of his paintings. Indeed, several drawings, more explicit in meaning, show these birds taking over a human mind. An essential purchase. Lynell A. Morr, John & Mable Ringling Muse um of Art Lib., Sarasota, Fla.
