Psychologist and career counselor Plumez (Successful Adoption) tenders the premise that the office frequently replaces increasingly unstable marriages, families and communities as a source of financial and emotional security. In that light, she and coauthor Dougherty analyze the practical benefits, opportunities and sometimes hidden emotional factors to be considered in making a voluntary (or involuntary) career change, along with reasons for remaining in a position. Interviews with recruiters, employment agencies and employees at all levels reveal that people often fear to leave the known and constant world of a job or company they hate, and reveal also their rationalizations for staying put. For those who decide to move on, the authors advise outlining long-range goals and criteria for selecting a new connection. They also offer a program for making the transition to a new job or another field, including integrating the new situation with one's personal life. Plumez contends that "the key to a good corporate union is dual loyalty: loyalty to yourself and the corporation." Plumez draws on her background in both psychology and business to analyze some of the hidden emotional attachments that accompany the work relationship. Among the topics she discusses are: benefit categories that lure people into staying with an organization, ways of handling the stress of being fired, how to determine if it is necessary to leave an organization (and if so, how to leave tactfully and discreetly), and how to change careers as well as jobs.
