Dance critic Croce adds this volume of 72 essays on the dance to her previous collections, Afterimages (1977) and Going to the Dance (1982). Most of these pieces were written for The New Yorker between 1981 and 1986. Croce, as always, proves herself to be an incisive critic with a remarkable ability to present strong dance images in words. Her interests range from classical ballet to modern dance to the more esoteric dance forms, and she does justice to all of these. There is much about both Baryshnikov ("a genius") and Balanchine, including a moving account of the effect of Balanchine's death on the New York City Ballet company. Essential for inclusive dance collections. Marcia L. Perry, Berkshire Athenaeum, Pittsfield, Mass.
