Essays trace the developments that led from Gorbachev's reform policies of perestroika and glasnost to a revolutionary movement affecting politics, economics and culture

Brumberg promises "something of a dialogue" in this collection of essays--Western scholars evaluate aspects of the Gorbachev "revolution," and Soviet counterparts respond. Those in search of intellectual confrontation will be dissappointed, yet the tone of general Soviet approval of foreign criticism is certainly one consequence of the "revolution" in recent Soviet thinking. Students of Soviet politics will value this book for different reasons. Few writers in the field, for example, can surpass the sheer intellectual force of American scholars William Butler and Alex Nove in their respective areas of Soviet law and economics. Soviet writers like Leonid Batkin (nationality relations), Natalia Ivanova (poetry), and Roy Medvedev (history) convey a political vitality founded in personal involvement. The result is neither "dialogue" nor balanced summary of recent Soviet politics, but it is of unquestionable value. Recommended for academic and public libraries with strong Soviet collections. --Zachary Irwin, Behrend Coll., Pennsylvania State Univ., Erie
