This first novel starts off with a bang: a suicide, a rape, and a theft, all involving a man in cowboy boots and a beautiful woman with the killing instincts of an animal. From that point on, however, both plot and writing veer off in confusing directions, never focusing clearly on theme or character. Jewel McAllister, the daughter of the man who committed suicide, is transplanted from the Arizona desert to New York's Upper East Side. She hates it. Twenty-five years later we catch up with Jewel in Venice, seduced by an impoverished count, and happy, she thinks. Jewel's adored cousin Johnny falls hard for a countess, who turns out to be the mysterious woman who has been haunting Jewel's life throughout the years. It is never quite clear why this connection exists or what effect is has on Jewel, who remains a fuzzy, frustrating character. A lot of effort has clearly gone into this novel, but the result is unsatisfying.
