Synopsis
Yamaoka Tesshu - master of kendo, the Japanese art of swordsmanship - was an outstanding figure in the turbulent era that marked the birth of modern Japan. Unlike Musashi, whose real story is difficult to ascertain, much more reliable information is available on Tesshu, who exemplifies the same spirit of warriorship. Yet this is the first work in English about this remarkable man. Tesshu displayed his warriorship in a variety of realms: in a politically volatile era, he arranged for the peaceful transfer of power from the old order to the new; he was a practitioner of kendo, Zen, and calligraphy as ell. John Stevens tells his story with a masterful blend of insight, knowledge, and perceptive understanding of Oriental culture. About the Author
John Stevens is Professor of Buddhist Studies and Aikido instructor at Tohoku Fukushi University in Sendai, Japan. He is the author or translator of over twenty books on Buddhism, Zen, Aikido, and Asian culture. He has practiced and taught Aikido all over the world.
