In the short poems it is a shock to find the soft spot in Schuyler's conversa tional style: namedropping; tedious crocheting; embarrassing, obsessive confidences about an unrequited love. A newly prominent word in his vocabu lary is the uninspiring ``perhaps.'' A short suite of exquisitely constructed poems on English subjects is followed by the title poem, a discursive medita tion which is built around, but never succeeds in containing, the death of Schuyler's mother.
