Like Arthur Bonner ( Among the Afghans , LJ 11/1/87) and Jan Goodwin ( Caught in the Crossfire , LJ 3/15/87), Lessing joins the ranks of writers speaking out on behalf of the Afghans. This book of four essays evolved from a visit of Lessing and others who traveled to Pakistan on behalf of the agency, Afghan Relief. Two themes emerge: the relationship between Afghan refugees and Pakistanis, and the quest to find a female commander among the freedom fighters.
