ea. vol: unpaged. CIP. Knopf. 1986. PSm $10.95. Kindergarten-Grade 3 Two retellings of old favorites, with accompanying cassette or video version available. In the first book, Andersen's original has been lightly dealt with, in this instance with unfortunate results; there is an unnecessary and insulting emphasis on the one leg of the tin soldier, and the beginning of the tale has Hollywood schmaltz. And one must wonder why, at the end of the tale, Tuber felt it necessary for the soldier to ``see that the ballerina did, in fact, have two legs. . . .'' Andersen didn't. The colored pencil illustrations are charming, and the book is well-designed, but the flaws in the retelling make other available versions preferable. Galdone's version (Clarion, 1979), with its strong bright colors and close adherence to the original Andersen, is an excellent one. The Ugly Duckling brings modern media-craty to a classic tale that has won the hearts of generations with the beauty of its words alone. This retelling is neither better nor worse than most of the many versions, print and non-print, available. However, it omits such rich images as the chattering of the stork in Egyptian , and the climax here suffers greatly in comparison with closer translations of Andersen. When choosing picture book versions of old classics, one must consider first the art of the words, for they are the true art of these tales. The illustrations (which all too often are the major consideration for purchase) are secondary. In this book, Van Nutt's paintings are strong in design, beautifully constructed and reproduced; however, they lack the warmth and involvement of the version by Adrienne Adams (Scribners, 1965; o.p.).
