Anna Egan Smucker drew upon her childhood in Weirton, West Virginia to write her first book for children, NO STAR NIGHTS. Winner of the 1990 International Reading Association Children's Book Award in the younger reader category, this book was followed by OUTSIDE THE WINDOW, a bedtime story illustrated by Stacey Schuett; both books published by Knopf. A HISTORY OF WEST VIRGINIA, a work written for adult new readers, was published in 1997 by the West Virginia Humanities Council. Her poems have been published in "Now and Then," A GATHERING AT THE FORKS, and THE BEST OF WEST VIRGINIA WRITERS. With a B.A. from Carlow College in Pittsburgh, and an M.A. from Michigan State University, she has worked as a teacher, children's librarian, and a writer-in-residence, and has given presentations and conducted writing workshops throughout the country. She lives with her family in Bridgeport, West Virginia.
Illus. in full color by Steve Johnson. "The story of a young girl growing up within the shadows of a great steel mill is eloquently depicted in this insightful, autobiographical picture book. Studded with vibrant imagery, the story subtly emphasizes the loving, caring, respectful relationships within a steelworker's family. Cleanly executed pages, evocative illustrations, and manageable vocabulary make this a unique purchase for a broad age range."?School Library Journal
