A portrait of the inhabitants--both legal and illegal--of the public lands of the United States features interviews with ranchers, miners, loggers, and federal administrators

James Conaway, the author of nine previous books, is a contributing editor for Preservation and a regular contributor to Smithsonian, National Geographic Traveler, and Food & Wine magazines, among many others.
Journalist Conaway spent six months traveling the millions of acres of public lands of the western United States. To come to terms with the "West as experience," he visited its inhabitants: ranchers, environmentalists, Native Americans, miners, marijuana growers, lumberjacks, and others who seek something of the frontier and the freedom of space or who flee restrictions. These vivid , colorful portraits effectively illustrate what he views as the "systematic diminishment" of the West far more eloquently than paeans to nature or diatribes against development. They also convey well the complexities of regulation, use, and misuse of these lands. Highly recommended. Roland Person, Southern Illinois Univ. Lib., Carbondale
