The chronicle reflects the growth of knowledge about botany and horticulture, fashions in plants, and even games played in the garden during the last 429 years. The people responsible for the care of the garden were solid folk with a keen interest, in the main, concerning horticultural matters. Beginning with a few medicinal herbs by the front door, the garden expanded to flower beds, lawns, orchards, a hop yard, and vegetable plots. New plants such as potatoes were brought in as experiments; the gardeners chose new bulbs, fruit varieties, and cultivars of roses as these became available. Most residents of Bartons End, the stout oak-framed dwelling Ordish described in The Living House (1959), took an active part in the labor required on the place.
