Vernon Mark is the retired Chief of Neurosurgery at Boston City Hospital. With the help of his public health specialist son Jeffrey, he has written a chatty, easy-to-understand guide to improving mental alertness and overall mental health. It is filled with interesting anecdotes and examples from his many years of practice, but the main goal is to provide the reader with a plan for living which includes a "brain power diet" and mental exercises to improve memory and maintain awareness. There are no revolutionary suggestions here--just good, solid advice to eat a healthy low-fat diet, avoid "brain poisons" like drugs and alcohol, and improve awareness of certain brain-altering illnesses. Includes mental status examination, brain exercises, diet plan, and a bibliography.
