Grade 6-9-- Laurie, 15, and her mother, an actress whose New York career seems stymied, form the nucleus around which this story of family relationships revolves. As they return to grandmother Nannie's rural Arkansas home to wait out the Depression, Laurie basks in the comfort of her extended family, but her mother dreams only of getting away again. When the opportunity to leave does come, it comes for Laurie, with her sweet voice and guitar-picking ability--the only one who appreciates what "down home" really means. Her first-person narrative is never intrusive. The plot moves forward at a tempered pace, maintaining interest on several levels. Romance is afoot among the young people , the mysteries of past family feuds and an uncertain future demand attention, and a consuming fire at a shoe factory ignites a suspenseful climax. Ross's rounded characters are fashioned from life; they each present the enigma of contradiction that abounds in human nature. Readers will enjoy this unassuming tale that depicts both a specific time and place and the common bonds that all people share. --Katharine Bruner, Brown Middle School, Harrison, TN
