When she inadvertantly frees four evil pirates from their magical entrapment, Boa, a young Australian girl, enlists her best friend's help to escape the pirates when they come looking for revenge

Ann James has illustrated many distinctive picture books, including THE MIDNIGHT GANG by Margaret Wild. She lives in Australia.
Grade 3-7-- Combine an Aikenesque sense of melodrama with Roald Dahl's appetite for the grotesque, and the results might be this appealing Australian pirate tale. Boa (short for Boadicea) lives with her grandfather, a retired sea captain, who enthralls her with stories from his nautical past. Her friend Wiggy envies Boa's tightly regimented, shipshape life, and despairs over his own parents, absent-minded musicians who can't be bothered with the simplest domestic tasks. When Boa magically summons her grandfather's rebellious crew from the desert island where he marooned them, she and Wiggy must then intervene to keep the pirates from taking revenge. Scratchy pen-and-ink drawings convey the robust humor of the story; short chapters make this an enticing choice for would-be pirates. --Ruth Smith, Chicago Public Library
