About the Author
William Muñoz has an avid interest in ecology and the environment and has taken the photographs for a number of books written by Dorothy Hinshaw Patent. Mr. Muñoz lives in Hamilton, Montana.

Grade 4-7-- A high-quality nature book on an endearing clown of a bird--the pelican. The species native to North America are the ones discussed here. A beginning chapter covers all the basics from food to breeding and describes three different uses for that distinctive pouch. Individual chapters on the brown and white pelicans get more specific; both include an action series of four photos showing fishing techniques. The final chapter explains why the birds are endangered and gives the outlook for them and the bleaker outlook for others elsewhere in the world. The book has a well-organized text with clear, crisp, full-color photos and a thorough index. The Pelican (Dillon, 1990) by Lynn Stone covers the same information and includes a handy fact list that names all seven species and a glossary.
