In this peep-through-the hole book, follow Dan the dog's trail around the house, picking up one object and discarding another as his family tries to find him.

PreSchool-- Toddlers can look on as two children search the pages for either a cat ( Kitty) or a dog ( Dan ). Just escaping the child's grasp, the pet is always glimpsed through the die-cuts in the pages, be it doors or windows; its stripes or spots are then cleverly repeated in the grandmother's kniting, the father's socks, a rug pattern, or a dress fabric. Both books portray a stereotypical white family: Grandma has a bun, glasses, and knits; Mom, Dad, and the kids are conventional in dress, with simple features. The illustrations are done in bright, clear primary colors in black outlines, with vibrant accents, in a style similar to Anne and Harlow Rockwell's. Two books that are attractive and engaging. --Jacqueline Elsner, Athens Regional Library, GA
