This simple but versatile rhyming book presents barnyard animals and their noises, along with numbers and colors. After the animals are introduced, they reappear in successive illustrations for youngsters to identify again--often cleverly placed, as when cows, birds and sheep are glimpsed through a barn window. The figures, particularly cats and dogs, are whimsically primitive, and several pictures include objects such as a shovel, a rake, flowers and apples for children to name. Barbier's bold palette is particularly eye-catching, while her variegated borders add visual interest without distracting from the art. Frequently the creatures' tails, ears or noses jut outside these frames, adding a playful and dynamic dimension. The large typography is often slanted, stretched or elongated to accentuate the animals' sounds. Ages 2-4.

PreSchool-K-- Rich colors and simple, childlike drawings are certain to attract the very young to this introduction to counting. Each of the numbers from one to ten is given a spread, with familiar farm animals as the focus of attention. Each new creature appears in the foreground, while children have the fun of counting the previously presented animals in the background. This provides a cumulative reinforcement of the concept. A rhythmic sentence (``Two black cows went moo moo moo''), which is printed in large type and placed at the bottom of each page, complements the bold illustrations. All pages are surrounded by a wide white margin, which enhances a clean, uncluttered, and inviting format. This is just right for young eyes. --Mary Lou Budd, Milford South Elementary School, OH
