Grade 5-7 The text of this German translation, which provides current information on the characteristics and behaviors of the Giant Panda, reads stiffly. The format of the book is not useful for assignments. There are no chapters but rather long run-on pages of text interspersed with a series of captioned color photographs, and since there is no table of contents or index, it is difficult to retrieve specific information. However, the color photographs, which make up most of the book, are unique because they provide a rare look at pandas in their natural habitat in the bamboo jungles of the mountains in central China. Better organized and more accessible information is available to children in other titles. McDearmon's Giant Pandas (Dodd, 1986) is better suited for assignments as well as browsing.
