The book's greatest potential is to make business writers sensitive to their foreign readers and to the many ordinary, innocent actions that can affect their correspondence and, therefore, their transaction. The need to be simple, brief, and literal is amply illustrated with examples and anecdotes; for example, an American writer would not want to say, "We will bend over backwards to meet your deadline." (A foreign reader will envision the firm's doing gymnastic stunts.) In addition to basic rules of grammar and usage, there are actual letters. Summarized at the end are important data for major countries (language, religious holidays, business customs, etc.); ethnic designations (e.g., how to refer to people from Gabon); foreign currencies; and numerous other sources of information. Well recommended.
