About the Author:
C. S. Adler is the author of many novels for young readers, including the recent One Unhappy Horse and Winning. She lives on Cape Cod and in Arizona.
From School Library Journal:
Grade 5-8-Faced with serious financial difficulties, Lainey's father is unable to buy the horse he had promised to get her for her 13th birthday. Furious with him for not telling her about their situation sooner and for treating her like his "little girl," Lainey decides to show him that she can earn money herself and that she can be as self-reliant as her older brothers. She strikes a deal with the owner of Dodge's ranch to work with a problem horse. With persistence, firmness, and kindness, she eventually succeeds in reforming Whiskey and her father-in addition to his love, she now has his respect. A young New Yorker visiting his father in Tucson provides a hint of romance and a solid bond of friendship for Lainey. Well-developed, interesting characters; a plot whose ending is upbeat, yet not saccharine; and a convincing, appealing girl/horse relationship make this a good read for fans of the genre.
