Presents pop-up versions of the numbers from one to ten, accompanied by the numbers printed in ten different type faces

Grade 3 Up-Numerals, from 1 to the zero in 10, are featured in this crisply designed pop-up book. Engineered to rise, unfold, or come together in the middle of each double-page spread are seven-inch high numerals, each in a different bright pure color, each in a different graphic typeface. The two, in alpha boule, is formed by a series of coin-sized dots. The nine, half filled in with solid blue ink, is shown in "broadway" typeface. On the left side of each presentation are 10 different versions of the featured numeral. The backgrounds are gleaming white. At the very end of the book are 10 lines, each showing all 10 numerals, labeled with the name of the typeface. This is a stark, handsome exercise in bookmaking, possibly of interest to a graphic designer, but of limited appeal to children.

A graphically bold book from which pop-up numbers fairly leap off the page and right into the imaginations of very young readers, who will ask for it again and again. Each number is presented in a different typeface--from ``stencil'' to ``moonbase alpha''--so that kids can learn to identify ``one through ten'' in its many different incarnations. Next to each number is a series of smaller numbers in all of the typefaces presented, which then can be looked up and matched with a list at the end of the book. The colors are vibrant and the numbers pop up in unusual and imaginative ways, so that the eye is constantly engaged. Olyff has created a counting book that is truly exciting. Simple, streamlined, and right on the money. (Picture book. 3- 8) -- Copyright ©1994, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.
