About the Author:
Stella Pevsner is the author of many popular books for middle-grade readers, most recently IS EVERYONE MOONBURNED BUT ME? She lives in Chicago, Illinois.
From School Library Journal:
Grade 5-8?Pevsner's knack for catchy and appealing titles is evident in this entertaining offering about 13-year-old Alexis and her family's secrets. Her parents' conflicts escalate; Dad moves out, while Mom plans to leave Chicago for the suburbs?a move Alexis fights. She and her friend Suzy are followed by Paul, a young man who turns out to be Alexis's half-brother from her father's unrecognized marriage in China years ago. Paul's arrival pulls the family back together. While the plot reads like the soap operas so hilariously spoofed throughout the novel, there is depth in the well-drawn characterizations and sharpness in the dialogue. Alexis's relationship with her not-very-likable mother will appeal to readers, as will her little brother's friendship with Suzy's grandmother. Alexis and Suzy engage in some potentially dangerous behavior while discovering Paul's identity (giving out phone numbers, agreeing to meet, etc.). Alexis recognizes this fact, but feels that she can trust her intuition. She grows in her understanding of love and learns the truth of her fortune cookie: "The things you wish for most you can achieve."?Connie Tyrrell Burns, Mahoney Middle School, South Portland, ME
